Blog 14: The first ICHQP Workshop hosted in London, UK

Grazia, 23 July 2025

The first  ICHQP Workshop 'From Planning to Operation: Efficient Assessment of Harmonic Emission from Distorting Installations' took place at King's College London on June 11-12 2025.

Modern distribution and transmission networks face challenges such as the rise of power electronics and the impact of increased cabling on harmonic impedance and resonances. Accurate harmonic studies are essential for managing harmonic disturbances and ensuring system stability and reliability across all voltage levels.

The workshop provides a platform for experts in harmonic analysis - ranging from network operators, manufacturers, consultants and research institutions to standardization bodies - to share insights from recent projects and explore future challenges and solutions in this evolving field. A total of 70 participants from system operators, research centres, consultancy, universities and manufacturers attended. The majority of participants were from Europe (including the UK, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland), with a good representation of other countries across the world (USA, Japan and Australia).

The workshop was organised in a single-track session, and included keynote speakers, podium and poster presentations, networking opportunities and a panel discussion. The first day started with keynote presentations, followed by an oral session on Planning Aspects and one on Operational Aspects. The day continued with a poster presentations, and ended with an evening event. The second day included a session on standardisation aspects and a session on practical case studies. The workshop ended with a round table discussion, led by Prof Mejer (Technical University of Dresden) and with the keynote speakers. The detailed program is available on the workshop website: https://ichqp-workshop.org

There was an agreement that harmonic issues are of growing importance, and that standards need to develop to address the changes introduced by new generations of power-electronics based devices. Examples of solutions to solve these issues were presented, and different approaches for harmonic assessment between various countries were discussed.

The ICHQP workshop received positive review from the participants who acknowledged the quality of the technical content and the discussions. The intention is to hold the workshop every two years, alternating with the ICHQP conference. â€‹
